    CANASTOTA, NY - MAY 14, 2009 - - The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today 1984 Olympic Gold Medal winner and two-time welterweight champion Mark Breland will attend festivities planned for the 20th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend set for June 11-14th.

“From the Olympic gold medal to the world title, Mark Breland was exciting to watch in the ring,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “The Hall is looking forward to welcoming him back to Canastota.”

One of the most decorated amateur fighters in history, Breland won five consecutive New York Golden Gloves titles (1980-84) and captured welterweight gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. He turned pro in 1984 and twice reigned as WBA welterweight champion (1987, 1989-1990). Breland scored wins over Harold Volbrecht, Rafael Pineda, Seung-Soon Lee and Lloyd Honeyghan while compiling a 35-3-1 (25 KOs) pro ledger. Now Breland is a successful trainer, guiding 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Deontay Wilder among others.

Events planned for the weekend include a banquet, night of rising stars, parade, golf tournament, boxing autograph card show, cocktail party and the Official Induction Ceremony honoring the Class of 2009. In addition, other special activities will be implemented for the celebration, including a fireworks display.

New inductees to be honored are bantamweight champion Orlando Canizales, heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, junior lightweight champion Brian Mitchell, matchmaker / publicist / promoter Bob Goodman, promoter Akihiko Honda, journalist Hugh McIlvaney and broadcaster Larry Merchant. Posthumous inductees will also be honored.

An impressive lineup of boxing legends of yesterday and today are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities.
