TO ATTEND HALL OF FAME INDUCTION WEEKEND
CANASTOTA, NY - MARCH 26, 2010 - The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today Hall of Fame middleweight champion Nino Benvenuti from Italy will attend festivities planned 21st Annual Hall of Fame Weekend set for June 10-13th”
“Nino Benvenuti was a fantastic middleweight champion who fought and defeated many of the top fighters of his era ,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “Boxing fans will enjoy the chance to see the Italian idol in Canastota.” Born in Trieste, Italy, Benvenuti is the 1960 Olympic welterweight gold medalist. He turned pro in 1961 and scored wins over Gasper Ortega and Denny Moyer before stopping Sandro Mazzinghi in six rounds for the world junior middleweight belt. He moved up in weight to engage Hall of Famer Emile Griffith in a middleweight championship trilogy that saw him win, lose and regain the strap in 1967 and 1968. Following successful defenses over Don Fullmer, Fraser Scott, Luis Rodriguez and Tom Bethea, he lost the title to Hall of Famer Carlos Monzon in 1970. After unsuccessfully challenging Monzon in the rematch he retired with an 82-7-1 (35 KOs) record. In 1992 Benvenuti was elected into the Hall of Fame. The June 10-13th Hall of Fame Induction Weekend will feature over 20 exciting events including a banquet, Madison Square Garden night, parade, golf tournament, cocktail party, and the official induction ceremony honoring the Class of 2010. Living inductees to be honored at the Official Induction Ceremony on Sunday, June 13th are light flyweight champion Jung-Koo Chang (South Korea), featherweight champion Danny “Little Red” Lopez (USA), manager Shelly Finkel (USA), referee / commissioner Larry Hazzard (USA), promoter Wilfried Sauerland (Germany), matchmaker Bruce Trampler (USA) and journalist Ed Schuyler (USA). Posthumous inductees will also be honored. Over 40 boxing stars are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities. In addition to Benvenuti, his three-time rival Griffith will also attend. Other stars slated to appear include Carmen Basilio, Tony DeMarco, Ken Norton, Aaron “The Hawk” Pryor, Angelo Dundee, Leon Spinks, James “Buster” Douglas, Gerry Cooney, Lou Duva and many others.
