Official Induction Ceremony Set For Sunday, June 11th
CANASTOTA, NY - MAY 26, 2017 - For boxers Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield and “The Baby Faced Assassin” Marco Antonio Barrera, trainer Johnny Lewis, judge Jerry Roth, journalist / broadcaster Steve Farhood and broadcaster Barry Tompkins, their day in the sun is rapidly approaching. On Sunday, June 11th they will join boxing's immortals when they are officially inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York. “We are eagerly anticipating paying tribute to the incredible accomplishments of the members of the Class of 2017,” said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy. “We look forward to welcoming them to Canastota to take their place in the Hall of Fame.” “It is so exciting to think that the new inductees will be boarding airplanes less than two weeks from now to make the trek to Canastota to receive boxing’s highest honor.” Holyfield was an Olympic bronze medalist, unified cruiserweight and heavyweight champion, Mexico’s Barrera was a three-division world champion, Australia’s Lewis trained such legends as Jeff Fenech and Kostya Tsyzu, Roth judged over 200 title bouts in a 35-year career, journalist /broadcaster Farhood was editor of The Ring and is the expert analyst on ShoBox: The New Generation and veteran broadcaster Tompkins handles blow-by-blow duties on ShoBox The New Generation. Each living inductee will receive a Hall of Fame Induction Certificate and a gold Hall of Fame Ring. The Class of 2017 also includes posthumous honorees, three-division world champion Johnny “Mi Vida Loca” Tapia in the Modern category; welterweight and middleweight standout Eddie Booker in the Old-Timer Category; and ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Sr. in the Non Participant Category. Inductees were voted in by members of the Boxing Writers Association of America and a panel of international boxing historians. A plaque with each inductee’s biography and photo will be on permanent display on the Hall of Fame Wall. The Official Enshrinement Ceremony will be held on the Hall of Fame Museum Grounds in Canastota, New York on Sunday, June 11th at 2:30 p.m. An impressive list of over 35 boxing greats from the United States and abroad are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities June 8-11th including Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Pernell Whitaker, Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe, “Irish” Micky Ward, Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez, James “Lights Out’ Toney, “Ferocious” Fernando Vargas, Michael and Leon Spinks and many more.
