TWO-DIVISION CHAMPION CARLOS ORTIZ TO RETURN TO
CANASTOTA TO CELEBRATE HALL OF FAME’S 30th ANNIVERSARY
2019 Hall of Fame Weekend set for June 6-9th
CANASTOTA, NY - FEBRUARY 4, 2019 - The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today Hall of Fame lightweight and junior welterweight world champion Carlos Ortiz will attend the Hall of Fame’s landmark 30th Anniversary celebration during the 2019 Hall of Fame Weekend, June 6-9th. “I’m so excited to return to Canastota to be part of the 30th Anniversary celebration. The International Boxing Hall of Fame and the Village of Canastota mean so much to me. It’s like my second hometown,” said Ortiz. Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Ortiz won the junior welterweight title with a 2nd round TKO over Kenny Lane in 1959. He moved down to the lightweight division and in 1962 scored a 15-round decision over Hall of Famer Joe Brown to win the world title. He lost and regained the belt in two 15-round bouts with Hall of Famer Ismael Laguna in 1965. Ortiz retired in 1972 with a 61-7-1 (30 KOs) record that includes wins over Hall of Famers Flash Elorde, Sugar Ramos and Duilio Loi. In 1991 Ortiz was elected into the Hall of Fame. “Without a doubt, Carlos Ortiz was one of the best to ever lace up a pair of boxing gloves. His skill set brought him to the top of the sport for so many years,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “The Hall is truly excited to welcome him back to Canastota to celebrate our milestone anniversary. Many events in “Boxing’s Hometown” of Canastota throughout the four-day celebration are planned, including a 5K Race / Fun Run, golf tournament, boxing autograph card show, VIP Cocktail Reception, Parade of Champions and the Official Induction Ceremony on the Hall of Fame Museum Grounds. The Hall of Fame Weekend evening events include Friday night’s Fight Night at Turning Stone and Saturday’s Banquet of Champions. Both events will take place at Turning Stone Resort Casino.
