TO BE SPECIAL GUEST FOR HOF’S 30th ANNIVERSARY

2019 Hall of Fame Weekend set for June 6-9th

CANASTOTA, NY - MARCH 13, 2019 - The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today former WBC welterweight champion John H. Stracey will be a special guest for the Hall of Fame’s 30th Anniversary celebration during the 2019 Hall of Fame Weekend, June 6-9th.      




















"It is always a pleasure to be a part of the International Boxing Hall of Fame Weekend and to be invited to attend the 30th anniversary is such a special honor,” said Stracey. “I am really excited to be involved in such a milestone year! Thank you to ‘Boxing's Hometown’ of Canastota."

England’s Stracey turned pro in 1969 and won both the British and European welterweight titles by 1974. In 1975, he defeated Hall of Famer Jose “Mantequilla” Napoles for the WBC welterweight belt in Mexico City via 6th round TKO and successfully defended against Hedgemon Lewis (TKO 10) the following year. Stracey hung up the gloves in 1978 with a 45-5-1 (37 KOs) record that includes wins over Ernie Lopez and Roger Menetrey among others.

“The 1970s welterweight division was an exciting era filled with incredibly talented 147-pounders and John H. Stracey rose to the top during that memorable time,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “The Hall is looking forward to welcoming him back to Canastota from across the pond to celebrate the Hall’s 30th Anniversary.”

Many events in “Boxing’s Hometown” of Canastota throughout the four-day celebration are planned, including a 5K Race / Fun Run, golf tournament, boxing autograph card show, VIP Cocktail Reception, Parade of Champions and the Official Induction Ceremony on the Hall of Fame Museum Grounds. The Hall of Fame Weekend evening events include Friday night’s Fight Night at Turning Stone and Saturday’s Banquet of Champions. Both events will take place at Turning Stone Resort Casino.







The Class of 2019 includes two division world champions Donald “Lone Star Cobra” Curry, Julian “The Hawk” Jackson and James “Buddy” McGirt; welterweight champion Tony DeMarco; matchmaker / promoter Don Elbaum, referee / judge Guy Jutras, publicist Lee Samuels, broadcaster Teddy Atlas and journalist Mario Rivera Martino.

An impressive list of over 35 boxing greats from the United States and abroad, including five-time world champion Vinny Paz, junior welterweight star “Irish” Micky Ward, 1970s heavyweight star Earnie Shavers, two-division champion Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton, referee Kenny Bayless, bantamweight champion Paulie Ayala and Hall of Famers Carlos Ortiz, Michael Carbajal, Marco Antonio Barrera and Orlando Canizales are scheduled to participate in the 30th Anniversary celebration.
