NOVEMBER 16, 2010 - Peter Cooney, of Westchester, NY, donated a commemorative gold Everlast boxing glove from the March 8, 1971 Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier I “Fight of the Century” at Madison Square Garden.

“This is a great collectible from the most famous fight of all time,” said Hall director Ed Brophy.

Cooney relayed an interesting story behind the glove. His parents, Marilyn and Everett, attended the fight with another couple. During the fight, they visited the souvenir shop and there was only one pair of the commemorative gloves left, so they bought it and each couple took home one glove. Cooney also joked that his mother spent much of the night staring at famed crooner Frank Sinatra, who was at ringside as a photographer for LIFE magazine.

The Hall of Fame thanks the Cooney family for their generosity.
