“The Coal Miner’s Daughter” will prepare for Sept. 2nd “Fight Night at The Fair”
at the New York State Fairgrounds


CANASTOTA, NY - AUGUST 19, 2009 - - The International Boxing Hall of Fame is pleased to announce that Christy Martin will set up training headquarters at the Hall of Fame from August 24 - 31. Martin is scheduled to box at “Fight Night at the Fair” on September 2nd at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, NY.

“We are so excited to bring one of the most famous and accomplished female fighters in history to Canastota to train for her upcoming fight,” said hall director Ed Brophy.

Martin will conduct workout sessions from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. daily at the Hall of Fame’s Event Pavilion from Monday, August 24th until Monday, August 31st. Workouts sessions will include sparring, heavy bag, speed bag, jump rope and more. The daily workouts are open to the public. Also, admission to the Hall of Fame will be waived during the training sessions.

“This will be a great opportunity for the public to see Christy workout and also tour the Hall and enjoy the many exhibits on boxing’s greatest fighters,” said Brophy.

Nicknamed “The Coal Miner’s Daughter,” Martin is a two-time world champion who helped bring women’s boxing into the mainstream over the course of her 20-year career. Martin has appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated and fought on the same card as boxing greats Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson. Boxing legend Don King was her promoter for 10 years. Martin is striving to reach 50 career victories, having earned her 48th win August 1st, bringing her professional record to 48-5-3 (31 KOs).

“Fight Night at the Fair” will feature three main events. In addition to Martin, 2004 Olympic heavyweight Jason Estrada and middleweight James McGirt Jr. will headline the first professional boxing event ever held at the fair’s grandstand.

Bouts are scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the Mohegan Sun Grandstand. Four additional bouts featuring some of New York State’s most exciting, up-and-coming professional fighters are also scheduled. Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports of Providence, RI will promote the fight night.

Tickets to “Fight Night at the Fair” are $20 and $15 and are available now at the New York State Fair Box office or through Ticketmaster. Admission to the Fair on the day of the event is included in the price of any ticket bought before Aug. 27. The ticket also includes one free admission to Hall of Fame.
