HALL OF FAME CELEBRITY GUESTS TO BE AT
RINGSIDE FOR “FIGHT NIGHT AT THE FAIR”
CANASTOTA, NY – AUGUST 20, 2009 – The International Boxing Hall of Fame is pleased to announce boxing stars Vito Antuofermo, Livingstone Bramble, George Chuvalo, James “Buddy” McGirt and Hasim “The Rock” Rahman will join Hall of Famers Carmen Basilio, Emile Griffith and Carlos Ortiz at ringside for “Fight Night at The Fair” on September 2nd at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, NY.
“This will be a great opportunity for sports fans to meet some of boxing’s great heroes,” said hall director Ed Brophy.
“Fight Night at the Fair” will feature three main events. Women’s boxing legend Christy Martin (48-5-3, 31 KOs) will battle Dakota Stone (9-7-5, 1 KO) for the vacant WBC female junior middleweight championship. Also, 2004 Olympic heavyweight Jason Estrada (15-2, 3 KOs) will meet Zuri Lawrence (24-14-4,) and middleweight James McGirt Jr. (20-2-1, 9 KOs) will square off with Anthony Pietrantonio.
Bouts are scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the Mohegan Sun Grandstand. Four additional bouts featuring some of New York State’s most exciting, up-and-coming professional fighters are also scheduled.
Tickets to “Fight Night at the Fair” are $20 and $15 and are available now at the New York State Fair Box office or through Ticketmaster. Admission to the Fair on the day of the event is included in the price of any ticket bought before Aug. 27. The ticket also includes one free admission to Hall of Fame.
"As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Hall of Fame, we are delighted to partner with the New York State Fair in hosting a night of professional boxing,” said Brophy. “With the combination of live boxing featuring many of the sport’s popular fighters and celebrity boxing greats at ringside, it will surely be an exciting evening."
The International Boxing Hall of Fame and the New York State Fair are working with Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports Inc. to offer Fair visitors an exciting and affordable new experience to add to their favorite Fair memories.
Antuofermo is the former world middleweight champion. He defeated Hugo Curro for the WBC / WBA titles in 1979 and holds wins over Bennie Briscoe and Emile Griffith among others. Now an actor, he has appeared in The Sopranos and Goodfellas.
A native of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, Bramble won the WBA lightweight title from Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini in 1984 in Buffalo, NY and reigned as champion until 1986. Also holds wins over Harold Brazier and Edwin Curet among others.
Chuvalo is the former Canadian Heavyweight Champion. During a 22-year career, he defeated Doug Jones, Cleveland Williams, Jerry Quarry and Mike DeJohn. He engaged in two title bouts, first against Ernie Terrell in 1965 (L15) and then against Muhammad Ali in 1966 (L15).
McGirt is the former junior welterweight and welterweight world champion. He has wins over Saoul Mamby, Frankie Warren, Howard Davis, Livingstone Bramble and Simon Brown. Now a trainer, he has worked with Arturo Gatti, Antonio Tarver, Nate Campbell and his son, James Jr.
Baltimore’s Rahman is the two-time heavyweight champion of the world (2001, 2005-2006). “The Rock” holds wins over Lennox Lewis, Al Cole and Monte Barrett. His pro record stands at 45-7-2 (36 KOs).
Canastota’s Basilio is the former welterweight and middleweight champion who engaged in 11 world title bouts. He holds victories over Tony DeMarco, Billy Graham, Johnny Saxton and Sugar Ray Robinson and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1990.
Griffith is a former three-time world welterweight champion, two-time middleweight champion and 1990 Hall of Fame Inductee. In a career that spanned 19 years (1958-1977), he defeated Luis Rodriguez, Dick Tiger and Nino Benvenuti among others.
A 1991 Hall of Fame Inductee, Ortiz is the former junior welterweight champion and two-time world lightweight champion. He fought 18 world title bouts in a 17-year career and scored wins over Joe Brown, Ismael Laguna and Sugar Ramos.
