INTERNATIONAL BOXING HALL OF FAME BALLOTS RELEASED

TO WORLDWIDE VOTING PANEL FOR 2022 ELECTION

Electors from around the world to select newest class of inductees

CANASTOTA, NY –OCTOBER 6, 2021 -The International Boxing Hall of Fame released the 2022 election ballots to an international panel of voters on October 1st. Inductees will be named in the following categories: Modern, Old-Timer, Non-Participant, Observer and Women’s Modern.

Members of the Boxing Writers Association of America and an international panel of boxing historians cast votes. Voters from Japan, England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States are among those who will participate in the election process.

“The October 1st ballot mailing is a special time for the sport of boxing," said Executive Director Edward Brophy. "There is tremendous anticipation as the Hall of Fame and the worldwide boxing community anxiously await the results to determine who will join the list of boxing immortals.”

Appearing on the men’s modern ballot for the first time are two-division world champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas (41-2, 34 KOs) from Brazil, four-division world champion Roy Jones Jr. (66-9, 47 KOs) from Pensacola, Florida and two-time flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (91-5-2, 47 KOs) from Thailand. The 2022 men’s modern ballot consists of 42 candidates whose last bout was no earlier than 1989.

Super bantamweight champion Alicia Ashley (24-12-1, 4 KOs) from Jamaica and two-division champion Anne Sophie Mathis (27-4-1, 23 KOs, 1 NC) from France debut on the women’s modern ballot. The 2022 women’s modern ballot consists of 12 candidates whose last bout was no earlier than 1989.

Connecticut welterweight and middleweight Lou Bogash (103-16-13, 41 KOs, 2 NC, 2 ND) was added to the old timer ballot, which consists of 50 candidates whose last bout was no earlier than 1893 and no later than 1942.

Referee Frank Cappuccino, judge Tom Kaczmarek and referee / judge Pat Russell have been added to the 29 candidate non-participant ballot, which honors those men and women who have made contributions to the sport apart from roles as boxers or observers,

Broadcaster Nick Charles, columnist Wallace Matthews and historian / producer Bob Yalen were added to the 24 candidate observer ballot, which honors print and media journalists, media executives and producers, publishers, writers, historians, record keepers, statisticians, photographers, artists and screenwriters.

Ballots were distributed October 1st and a news conference will be held in early December to announce results of the voting.

Due to the cancellation of the two previous Hall of Fame Induction Weekends (2020 and 2021), the Classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022 will be honored at a “Once In a Lifetime” event themed the Hall of Fame Induction Weekend Trilogy on June 9-12, 2022. Schedule of events and ticket application will be released soon.

Many events in “Boxing’s Hometown” of Canastota throughout the four-day celebration are planned and the Hall of Fame Weekend evening events include Friday night’s Fight Night at Turning Stone and Saturday’s Banquet of Champions. Both events will take place at Turning Stone Resort Casino.
