CANASTOTA, NY - MARCH 6, 2021 - -To commemorate the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the iconic heavyweight championship bout between undefeated Hall of Famers Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, the Village of Canastota will proclaim March 8, 2021 as “Fight of the Century Day” in “Boxing’s Hometown.”
A sellout Madison Square Garden crowd and 300 million viewers across the globe witnessed one of the greatest events in sports history. Known as the “Fight of the Century,” in an epic battle, “Smokin’” Joe earned a unanimous decision to retain the world heavyweight championship to keep his undefeated record intact and become the first man to defeat Ali.
“Because Canastota is the home of the Hall of Fame whose mission is to preserve boxing history, including the MSG ring from the “Fight of the Century,” it is fitting to recognize the 50th anniversary of this historic fight in boxing,” said Canastota Mayor Rosanne Warner. “It’s so amazing to think that the most famous ring in boxing history is in Canastota for generations of boxing fans to enjoy.”
The Village of Canastota and the Hall of Fame look forward to boxing fans enjoying memorabilia from the “Fight of the Century” throughout this year in celebration of the 50th anniversary. In addition to seeing the MSG ring, items on display include an official fight ticket, program, press kit, poster, as well as an Ali and Frazier exhibit featuring their fist impressions. Both champions are also featured on the Hall of Fame Wall.
“With Spring approaching and people beginning to plan short or long trips to various destination points, we always enjoy welcoming boxing fans to our small upstate village to visit the Hall of Fame and everything our community offers,” said Warner. “We know fans will love seeing the MSG ring and celebrating the 50th anniversary throughout the year.”
