STATEMENT FROM THE INTERNATIONAL BOXING HALL OF FAME
FOLLOWING NEWS OF ARRESTS MADE IN 2015 BELT THEFT

CANASTOTA, NY – JUNE 15, 2023 – Earlier today the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania held a news conference in Scranton, PA announcing that arrests have been made in the theft of six championship belts, four won by Carmen Basilio and two won by Tony Zale, from the International Boxing Hall of Fame on November 5, 2015.

“It was very upsetting to think that someone would have done this and the theft was devastating to the Boxing Hall of Fame and our community. Today we are grateful to learn of arrests being made in the case and are optimistic that justice will be served to those responsible,” said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy. “The Boxing Hall of Fame is appreciative of the collective efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the United States Attorney’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Canastota Police Department, Canastota Police Chief Sean Barton and former Chief James Zophy, the Madison County District Attorney’s Office, Madison County Sheriff’s Department and the New York State Police, who all worked diligently on this investigation.”
