HALL OF FAME FLIES FLAGS AT HALF-STAFF
FOR TWO-DIVISION CHAMPION DWIGHT MUHAMMAD QAWI
CANASTOTA, NY - JULY 28, 2025 - The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced its flags will fly at half-staff in memory of two-division world champion and Hall of Famer Dwight Muhammad Qawi who passed away on July 25th at the age of 72.
““Dwight Muhammad Qawi’s relentless style made him a fan favorite and one of boxing’s most popular stars of the 1980s,” said Executive Director Edward Brophy. “The Hall of Fame offers our condolences to the Qawi family and joins the boxing world in mourning his passing.”
Born on January 5, 1953 in Baltimore, he moved to Camden, NJ as a child. With no amateur bouts, he turned pro in 1978. The 5' 7" powerhouse stopped Matthew Saad Muhammad (TKO 10) to win the WBC light heavyweight belt in 1981 and reigned until 1983 when he lost a unification bout with Hall of Famer Michael Spinks (L 15). In 1982 he legally changed his name to Dwight Muhammad Qawi following his conversion to Islam. “The Camden Buzzsaw” moved up in weight to capture the WBA cruiserweight title in 1985. Behind an aggressive ring style, he logged a 41-11-1 (25 KOs) record that includes wins over Leon Spinks, Mike Rossman, James Scott, Lee Roy Murphy, Jerry Martin and Eddie Davis.
In 2004, Qawi was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
